Secretary of State for Administrative Reform Dr. Florindo Pereira Signs Accord with Leichardt Mayor Mr. Cr Jamie Parker

An agreement to rehabilitate the Bobonaro District Gymnasium in the Maliana Sub-District has been signed as part of the program to strengthen the relationship between ‘Friendship Cities’ in Australia and Timor-Leste. The Secretary of State for Administrative Reform, Dr. Florindo Pereira, signed the accord with the Mayor of Leichardt, Mr. Cr. Jaime Parker, on December 11, 2008, in the District Administration Office of Bobonaro.

Dr. Florindo Pereira thanked the Leichardt Community and their generosity in repairing the Maliana Gymnasium, which serves as a sport facility for youth. He expressed his hope that in the future, the Leichardt Community can continue to support the people in the Bobonaro district with additional projects. This project is a singular opportunity for the Bobonaro District, as other districts have yet to receive similar rehabilitation projects.

The Mayor of Leichardt, Mr. Cr Jaime Parker, said that he was very pleased to be able to visit Maliana and see for himself the condition of the Gymnasium that will be repaired. While the rehabilitation is slightly expensive, this will not be a problem, because he has different ways of fund raising from the Leichardt community, which can assist in the rehabilitation. He promised that the project would be completed within 2009, and that he would return to Bobonaro to hold the inauguration.

The rehabilitation project has a budget of 147,000 US dollars and will start in 2009. The District Administrator of Bobonaro said that, according to the agreement, the tender process will be within the District Administration’s competency. The Bobonaro District Leader also said that he will choose a company that has the credibility and the quality to manage this project, because it will directly effect the development of the district, especially in the area of sports.
